New Furniture in an Old House
We bought some new furniture for the Farm this year. A lot actually. Well-made. Classic lines. Beds, sofas, rugs, chairs, porch furniture, etc. After three years of use by our family and guests, it was time for some upgrades. And of course, we’ve kept many of the charming old pieces that have been here for years.
The Best Places to Stay on the Midcoast This Summer
Maine’s Midcoast is a sought-after travel destination for many looking to explore quintessential coastal Maine without the hustle and bustle of Southern Maine. We are thankful to be located in the heart of the Midcoast, in Friendship, Maine. From outdoor hikes to coastal stays, this area has so much to offer! At the heart of every great vacation lies the perfect place to stay. Keep reading for our list of the top places to stay here in the Midcoast. With lodging such as the picturesque and charming Three Sisters Farm, you will surely find your perfect getaway.
Three Sisters Farm Retreat Center
If you’re looking for some quiet, some rest, some renewal, some Retreat, come to the Farm. Come by yourself, with a partner, or a group of spiritual friends. You are welcome in the summer, but you might want to consider coming in the fall, winter, or spring. We don’t have a seven night minimum stay then and rates are cheaper, so you can pop up for a weekend or a mid-week escape. And MidCoast Maine is beautiful in any season.
Come meditate looking out on a field. Do yoga in the great room or the barn loft, depending on the season. Sit in the barn office, with its view of the farm, and work on your novel. Turn off the house lights and climb the back hill to see the Milky Way like you haven’t seen it in years, maybe ever. Walk out to the point and contemplate Creation. Wonder at the flight of a blue heron, the sight of a bald eagle sitting upright at the top of a spruce, bobcat tracks in the snow, the sound of coyotes calling in the distance.
Friendship Culture
The other day we headed out with our kids and the dog to tap maple trees for syrup, something we had never done before. We were at the edge of our woods by the road, when an older man pulled up in a very old pick up truck. He rolled down his window and said, “Hey, you’re tapping a spruce.” Then he laughed and said, “No, that’s definitely a maple, I can’t tell if it’s a sugar or a black. And that looks like another good maple over there.” We chatted. He said he was planning to tap trees too. He gave us some advice, like put the tap the side of the tree that faces the sun. We thanked him, and he drove off.
Come Have Some Winter
As we all know, winter is an endangered species, its habitat rapidly shrinking. One of the reasons we wanted to spend this year at Three Sisters Farm was to have a winter. And while there have been colder and snowier Januarys here in MidCoast Maine, we have not been disappointed. There’s been plenty of sledding, skiing several times a week at Camden Snowbowl, beautiful drives admiring how snow hangs heavy in the trees, not to mention adventures like getting spit out of a toboggan chute at 35 mph and skidding across frozen Hosmer Pond.
Really, the only disappointment has been my poor powers as a poet to convey just how beautiful winter is around here. But here are a few attempts:

In Praise of Stick Season
It is a truism that here in northern New England we don’t have four seasons, we have six. Of course we have Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. But we also have those awkward hump seasons: Mud Season, after the snow and ice have melted and before the earth has greened, when the ground lies soggy and brown; and Stick Season, after the last foliage has all fallen, before the world is blanketed in white, when the trees stand bare and gangling.
Fall Poems
One of the pleasures of being at the farm full time this year has been getting to watch the arc of autumn from the first hints of color to the last leaves clinging to the trees. Here are a few poems that reflect moments of that progression.
