A Maine Spring Bucket List: Where to Welcome Warmer Days

Camden Hills State Park

Kick off your spring adventures with a hike at Camden Hills State Park, a true gem of Midcoast Maine. With over 30 miles of trails, there's something for every hiker. The famed Mount Battie Trail is a favorite, leading you to a lookout tower that offers panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and the surrounding islands. The crisp spring air can make this an invigorating experience, perfect for shaking off winter’s cobwebs. Don’t forget your camera - the views from the top are gorgeous! And for a more leisurely hike, consider the Megunticook Trail. Its gentle ascent leads through the forest to a lovely view, ideal for a peaceful picnic.

Explore Coastal Gardens

Spring is also the perfect time to visit Maine’s many public gardens. The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay is a must-see, featuring 295 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, walking trails, and waterfront views. Visitors of all ages love the fragrant herb garden and beautiful views from the Great Lawn, while kiddos are especially delighted by the enchanting fairy gardens! Be sure to check their schedule for special spring events, including guided tours and workshops.

For a more intimate experience, consider visiting Merryspring Nature Center in Camden - a delightful community garden with walking trails that are perfect for a peaceful afternoon stroll. This hidden gem showcases a wide array of perennials and annuals, making it a perfect spot to relax and anticipate the arrival of spring. The center also often hosts workshops and educational programs, so keep an eye out for any that pique your interest.

Discover Seafront Walks

Nothing says spring like a leisurely stroll along the water. One of our favorite walks is the Portland Harborwalk trail, which takes you through the historic waterfront of Portland, showcasing an up-close view of the harbor. As you walk, be sure to stop by one of the seafood shacks to savor some fresh lobster rolls or pick up a Maine souvenir to bring back with you!

For a more rugged coastal experience, head to the Owls Head Lighthouse. A short hike up a beautiful trail leads you to a quintennial Maine lighthouse perched on the rocky shore. This area is also a great spot for birdwatching, particularly when all the migratory birds return in the spring.

Relax at a Charming Retreat

After a day of exploration, there’s nothing quite like unwinding at a cozy retreat. Maine is home to numerous character-filled bed-and-breakfasts and vacation rentals that provide a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Camden Maine Stay Inn is a beautifully restored Victorian home that offers sweet cottage-feeling accommodations. Enjoy a homemade breakfast made with local ingredients before venturing out to explore the picturesque town of Camden.

For a more resort-like option, you could consider booking a stay at The Inn at Ocean’s Edge in Lincolnville. The location offers gorgeous views of Penobscot Bay as well as elegantly appointed rooms. Enjoy an afternoon by the pool or a walk along the beach.

Or, for a more private experience, check out Three Sisters Farm in Friendship. This charming farmhouse is surrounded by 11 acres of pastoral fields and is just 1/3 of a mile from a tidal cove. The location offers easy access to hiking trails and local attractions, but the peaceful setting may also convince you to stay put and relax in your private world!
