How to Experience A Quintessential Maine Summer Vacation

There is no need to romanticize summer if yours is spent in Maine. Our charming state is filled with stunning coastlines, quaint towns, and no shortage of outdoor activities. With years of Three Sisters Farm as our home base, we’ve developed a wealth of knowledge about what to do and where to do it. Whether you're looking to relax at the coast or venture into the great outdoors, Maine has what you’re looking for. Here’s our guide to having a quintessential Maine summer.

Explore Acadia National Park

Exploring national parks in the summertime is a must. Acadia National Park offers breathtaking views— it’s perfect for a leisurely bike ride! For those craving a good hike, 158 miles of trails wind through Maine’s wilderness, perfect for both day hikes and longer backpacking trips. Plus, you can enjoy the stunning sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, the first place in the U.S. to see the morning light.

Visit The Coast

Visiting the coast is another essential part of a Maine summer. In Bar Harbor or Boothbay Harbor, you can have a true Maine experience and embark on a whale-watching tour. As far as beaches go, Popham Beach is known for its soft, sandy shores and picturesque views. Or, try Drift Inn Beach for a day of sunbathing, swimming, and exploring tide pools. For a more unique spot, Walker's Beach in Friendship is surrounded by rocky cliffs and cool ocean waters, providing a dramatic landscape. Plus, it’s just around the corner from Three Sister’s Farm!

Lighthouses

No visit to Maine is complete without seeing its iconic lighthouses. You can find Pemaquid Point Lighthouse a short trip from Three Sisters Farm, offering stunning ocean views and a small museum detailing its history. Marshall Point is a prime spot to visit, as it’s the lighthouse featured in Forrest Gump. Within a day’s trip, you can also explore Owls’ Head and Rockland Breakwater. Quintessential Maine symbols, these landmarks are especially beautiful at sunset, making them the perfect shot to capture.

Dining Out

Dining in Maine is a treat, especially for seafood lovers. Three Sisters Farm is located in Friendship, an unspoiled lobstering village offering authentic Maine seafood with its freshly caught lobster. Jameson Point Lobster, also located near our farm, serves up some of the best lobster rolls around. For a sweet treat, we recommend Sunny’s Scoops for a brain freeze worth your while. Or, try Round Top Ice Cream in Damariscotta for some old-fashioned ice cream that’s perfect after a day of exploring.

Festivals

Maine has a multitude of festivals during the summer—they’re a great way to get to know the local community and its character. The Maine International Film Festival in Waterville showcases a wide range of films from around the world, making it a cultural highlight of a Maine summer. There is also nothing like the hometown feeling of the Yarmouth Clam Festival if you find yourself in Southern Maine. Or, you can catch the Camden Shakespeare Festival for a presentation of Shakespeare’s timeless works in a picturesque outdoor setting.

On The Water

Water activities abound in Maine. Sailing along the beautiful coastline and islands is a popular choice, with numerous charters available from short trips to multi-day adventures. There is also kayaking for a more active option-- kayaking through the scenic Casco Bay is a great way to explore its many islands and coves. Closer to our home base, Maine Kayak at Muscongus Bay offers full-day explorations. For a truly insightful experience, join a lobster boat tour to learn about Maine’s industry firsthand.

In a nutshell, a summer in Maine is a blend of all your favorite activities. From exploring national parks to savoring fresh seafood, there's something for everyone. At Three Sisters Farm, we have all the inside information for a perfect itinerary. We're here to provide the perfect home base after a long day of exploration. So pack your bags, head to the Pine Tree State, and experience the magic of a quintessential Maine summer. You won’t regret it!
