How to Plan the Perfect Fall Weekend Away in Maine

Fall is a magical time in Maine, with the crisp air, vibrant foliage, and cozy vibes making it the perfect season for a weekend getaway. If you're looking to plan the ultimate fall weekend in the Pine Tree State, we've got you covered. From scenic drives and outdoor activities to delicious dining and comfy accommodations, here's how to make the most of your time in Maine this fall!

Choose the Perfect Destination

When planning your fall weekend getaway in Maine, the first step is to choose the perfect destination. Whether you prefer the rugged coast, picturesque lakes, or charming small towns, Maine has something for everyone. Consider visiting Acadia National Park for breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and colorful foliage. Or, head to the MidCoast, where the charming towns of Camden and Rockland provide the ideal mix of outdoor adventures, cozy shops, and restaurants.

Get Outdoors

One of the best ways to experience Maine in the fall is by getting outside and exploring the natural beauty of the state. Go for a hike in the mountains (Mt. Battie is our favorite!), kayak along the coast, or take a scenic drive along one of Maine's many scenic byways. In our opinion, it’s hard to beat driving the Coastal Route (or at least doing part of it)! If you opt to stay at Three Sisters Farm, you can leave from our beloved Friendship and drive along the scenic shoreline through the picture-perfect towns of Camden and Rockport, before returning inland through the foothills and even more lovely towns. Don't forget to pack layers and sturdy shoes, as the weather can be unpredictable during the season.

Enjoy Local Cuisine

Maine is a foodie's paradise — known for its fresh seafood, hearty comfort food, and delicious baked goods, there’s a treat for every mood. Be sure to sample some of the local specialties, such as lobster rolls, clam chowder, and blueberry pie. To really enjoy your weekend getaway, visit a farmers' market or local farm stand (Beth’s is our favorite!) to pick up some fresh produce and delicious goodies.

Stay in Cozy Accommodations

To make your fall weekend getaway in Maine truly memorable, consider staying in a cozy spot that captures your perfect vision of Autumnal New England. Downeast, the grand Bar Harbor Inn is located right on the town’s Shore Path, providing a homey yet sophisticated feel. Conversely, the stand-alone Salt Cottages exude a breezy allure, with fire pits lending cozy vacationland vibes. In the MidCoast, our favorite options include the recently and beautifully restored Norumbega Inn in Camden or our charming farmhouse in Friendship. Whether you prefer a lakeside retreat or a seaside escape, there are plenty of options in Maine.

Planning the perfect fall weekend away in Maine is all about embracing the natural beauty, delicious cuisine, and cozy accommodations the state has to offer. And whether you're a nature lover, foodie, or avid photographer, there's something for everyone in Maine this fall. Happy travels!
